It has been said the only constant in life is change, and it seems that 2009 is being anticipated as the year of change. Change can sometimes be frightening, but the challenge is to welcome and embrace change.

Over the past four years, I have witnessed a great deal of change. From working as Executive Director of the Chamber under President Jay Craddock and later serving on the Board of Directors, I now find myself in the position of incoming president. As I reflect on the past four years, I remember the first year we published the Bridgeport Chamber Directory and Resource Guide. Now in its fourth year of publication, it has evolved and changed, but it remains one of the most frequently used references for all of Wise County. It contains the most up-to-date facts about our city and surrounding areas. Whether you are looking for information concerning our history or listings for businesses, lodging, or restaurants, this guide contains it all.

Growing up in a small town myself, I well appreciate and understand the advantages of small town living. Although we never want to lose our small town atmosphere, we must also be open to change. The Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce Officers and Directors are committed to capitalizing on our strengths while at the same time working to make our community a better place to work and raise a family. Over the last few years, we have seen a growth in our membership as well as an increase in attendance at our Coal Miners' Festival, Butterfield Stage Days, and PRCA Dodge Rodeo. We have seen the purchase of an authentic replica of a Concord Stagecoach to help in promoting tourism to our city.

Bridgeport has much to offer, but there is always room to improve. With the aid of my fellow Board Members and the excellent Chamber staff, it is my goal to work to promote and serve the community in which we live. 2009 is a year of change. I hope that change includes you taking an active part in our community and Chamber. I appreciate the confidence you have shown by allowing me to serve as the Chamber president. I am excited about what this position has in store and optimistic about the difference we can make together.
